Self Absorbed Bob Costas Attacks Gun Rights

Bob Costas has long been a self absorbed, bloviating, “I know better than you” talking head. He is probably best known for his work in baseball, wherein he dreams that one day we could go back to the 50′s when New York was the center of the baseball world. The 50′s baseball dreamer has long pretended that the game was more pure and the players better in the 50′s. While irritating everyone with stories of the glory that was New York baseball during the decade, it’s rarely mentioned that the Dodgers and Giants left New York because no one bought tickets to their games. Of course that would require mentioning baseball is a business and business in the world of people like Costas ruins everything.
It was hardly a surprise to wake up this morning to stories about Costas’ anti-gun rant at halftime of the Cowboys-Eagles game on NBC. Was anyone really surprised that NBC offered left-wing commentary during NFL games? They’ve been doing this for years. This is NBC after all, owned by General Electric and Comcast both of which heavily support Obama and Democrats. Costas is of course bloviating about guns because of a murder-suicide over the weekend perpetrated by Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Javon Belcher.
To listen to Costas you would think that guns are the only weapon available to murder someone with. As though Belcher couldn’t have killed his girlfriend with a knife or perhaps his bare hands. We’re talking about a NFL player, even if he happens to play for the Chiefs. Let’s not pretend like he wasn’t strong enough to kill someone without a weapon if he so desired. But no, in the world of Bob Costas it’s the gun that killed these two.
The best part of Costas’ self-absorbed rant was his quotation from an otherwise obscure Kansas City columnist Jason Whitlock. Costas goes out of his way to tell us that he doesn’t always agree with Whitlock, as though viewers care about Costas’ opinion of obscure columnists. The narcissism of it all is just delicious.
Putting aside Costas for a moment, Whitlock’s argument is patently absurd. He argues that handguns don’t protect people. That would be news to thousands of Americans who have warded off criminals with their handguns. It would be news to a million American policemen who carry handguns. Or are cops the only legitimate carriers of handguns? The fact is there are millions of Americans who own handguns in order to protect themselves and their property. They hope to never have to use them but that doesn’t take away from the reason why they own them.
In the world of Costas and Whitlock (just so you know, it’s a world Costas doesn’t always agree with) handguns are nothing but weapons of offense when for the overwhelming majority of gun owners is the opposite of why they own them. Handguns are a weapon of defense. Unfortunately Costas doesn’t seem to understand that. Perhaps he has a security guard in his gated community. The rest of us don’t have that luxury.
What happened in Kansas City on Saturday was a tragedy and an outrage. The one and only person responsible for it was Belcher. Rather than taking time to make a self important political statement during a football game, Costas should have spent his 90 seconds offering sympathy to the families, to the Chiefs organization and to the little baby who now has no parents. Of course a narcissist like Costas isn’t going to offer sympathy for other people. He’s going to offer his political opinion about how others should live their lives. Because of course the opinion of Bob Costas is very important and must be shared on national television during a football game.
