Jesse Jackson Jr. Pleads Guilty, Media Largely Ignores

Former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. is going to plead guilty to charges relating to illegal campaign expenditures. It seems Jesse the younger has a taste for $43,000 Rolex watches, furs and Michael Jackson memorabilia. Jackson and his wife managed to spend $750,000 worth of campaign donations on personal expenditures. As a result Jackson is likely headed to the slam for around four years. Prosecutors are asking for 46-58 months, sentencing hasn’t been scheduled yet but is likely to be several months from now. Jackson’s wife is also expected to plead guilty though her sentence is likely to be significantly less than her husband’s.
As is typical of the mainstream press, Democrat scandals are ignored. ABC offered a whole 18 seconds on the matter. Another Chicago Democrat is heading to the slam and it’s gotten next to zero coverage. Just like the Kwame Kilpatrick scandal, just like Sen. Menendez, just like Diane Hathaway, the media is ignoring this Democrat scandal. Oh look, Marco Rubio is drinking water again! That’s news in the media today. The last Democrat scandal the media covered was Rod Blagojevich and they only covered it to protect Obama. The more they put Blagojevich in front of the cameras the more Obama was able to distance himself because let’s face it, the former Governor turned jail bird is a clown.
The media we are getting about Jesse Jackson Jr. has been largely sympathetic. Poor Jesse the younger was just confused about which money was his and which was his campaign’s. Because we all forget that we don’t earn $750,000. Now they’re playing the bipolar card, with Jesse the elder claiming his son is under “tight medical supervision.” The message is clear, feel sorry for the former Congressman, he’s bipolar. No one could be mean to someone with bipolar. That’s of course if you believe the Congressman is actually bipolar. It’s very convenient that Jesse the younger suddenly became mentally ill as the Feds closed in on his racket.
The big question here is whether President Obama pardon’s or commute’s Jackson’s conviction. Obama hasn’t used his pardon power on anyone high profile yet. He’s letting the former Illinois Governor rot in a Colorado prison, he never pardoned former fundraiser Tony Resko. Obama has a history of ditching former allies as a long line of early Obama for State Senate donors will tell you.
On the other hand Jesse Jackson Jr. has a father who has been for better and usually worse the defacto (perhaps self proclaimed as well) leader of blacks in this country for decades. Jesse the elder hasn’t exactly been part of the Obama administration, he and other leaders like Al Sharpton have been largely shut out by Obama. Jackson was allegedly around when Obama got his start and he still enjoys considerable support in the black community. Whether that’s enough to sway Obama towards a pardon is anyone’s guess.
Playing armchair President, any public official who misuses either public money or money donated to a campaign must be punished. Jesse Jackson Jr. essentially stole money from donors. People gave money to his campaign expecting it to be used for campaign expenses not for Rolex watches, Michael Jackson memorabilia and other personal items. This stealing should be punished. If we followed Biblical law, Jackson should have to repay those whom he stole from times four. That seems a better penalty than wasting tax money housing him for four years. Unfortunately that remedy isn’t available. The President has no business giving Jackson a pardon or commuting his sentence. This is a serious crime against public trust, it deserves a serious punishment.
