Obama’s Mediocre Speech; Granholm’s Wacko Performance

The Democrats worst fears came true last night. Bill Clinton gave a better speech than Barack Obama. You knew this was going to happen. Bubba hates Obama and did everything in his power to outshine him. Meanwhile Obama appears tired and worn out. His soaring rhetoric is no longer soaring. Crowd reaction to him isn’t what it was 4 years ago. Interestingly former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm may have stolen the night with her bizarre speech. In Granholm we can see everything that is wrong with Obama’s policies and perhaps what is right in Romney’s. By stealing the show, Granholm unintentionally brought attention to her failed job as Governor in Michigan.

Obama’s speech is being panned as pedestrian and overconfident from the left. Obama offered few if any specifics about his plans for a second term. He spent most of his time blaming Bush, without actually naming him. We’ve heard it all before from this President, at what point does he think the public will stop listening? The problem is that Obama thinks the public is listening but are being manipulated by dastardly Republicans and their lies. He’s really discounting the public’s ability to see that we have a $16 trillion debt, up over $5 trillion since Obama took office. He acts as though we can’t see the 23 million unemployed or the lack of new jobs, only a net gain of 300,000 since Obama took office. The public has noticed that this is the slowest economic recovery since WWII. The public isn’t stupid, but Obama thinks we are.

Which brings us back to Jennifer Granholm. She led Michigan to a one state recession when she was Governor. She increased taxes, refused to revamp Michigan’s oppressive business tax and spent like a drunken sailor until Michigan’s Constitution (which requires a balanced budget) forced her to make some paltry cuts. Once out of the way, Republican Gov. Rick Snyder has led a recovery by revamping the business tax and cutting spending. Michigan’s economy is on the upswing, our manufacturing base has the tools it needs to grow.

The parallel between Granholm and Snyder and Obama and Romney is pretty clear. Neither Snyder or Romney is perfect, I have a particular dislike for Rick Snyder. But their policies will bring about a real economic recovery. They’ll fix the mess that the Democrats have made. By acting like a wild Canadian (Granholm was born in Canada) Granholm has brought upon herself and Obama a very negative comparison. Democrats claim to fix messes but in reality they make them worse. It’s up to tough economy minded Republicans to really clean up the mess.

The Democratic Convention won’t bring about any serious bump for Obama. Let’s face it, no one is watching this stuff anymore. Sure, we political junkies tune in and so do hardcore members of whichever party is holding its convention. But polling shows that less than 20% of independent voters tune in. With so few tuning in, there won’t be any significant polling changes. The question is whether the public will tune into the debates, which you have to think many will. The debates are the next big opportunity for the candidates to increase their odds of winning. How those play out is anyone’s guess. But if Obama performs at the debates like he did last night, he leaves a very wide window open for Romney.

Michigan’s Forced Unionization Earns SEIU Millions

Michigan is a forced unionization state. In other words, there is no right to work in this state. If an industry or business is unionized, employees have no choice but to join the union. Even if they don’t want to. Thousands of people are stuck in unions they didn’t vote for and don’t really care to be part of. The unions rake in millions in forced union dues, which they use to fund political campaigns among other things.

Here in Michigan if an industry is unionized, everyone must join the union and pay dues directly out of their paycheck. The unions have seen this as an oppertunity to expand their ranks and increase their coffers, even for people who have no need for a union and who don’t want it. For example, home health care workers who take care of sick loved ones. The state government under former Democrat Governor Jennifer Granholm allowed SEIU to unionize people who have no need for a union. These health care workers, who don’t work for anyone but get insurance or other benefits from the state, are funding SEIU and get nothing in return. They have no ability to opt out.

The unions have also tried to unionize home day care workers. What exactly a union can do for people who work out of their own home is beyond anyone’s imagination. But what the unions can do is force these home day care providers to fund the union. Why? Because in Michigan you have no right to work if a union is present. The unions have also tried to unionize graduate students at the University of Michigan. If you want to attend graduate school, you have no choice but to join a union and pay them a portion of your teaching stipend. The union does nothing for you in return, you don’t even have the right to strike.

Now the unions are trying to unionize a group of disabled people who are working in a rehab program. These people are learning how to work again after being disabled in one way or another. Apparently this requires unionization, never mind that this is a teaching program. The union isn’t going to do anything for these people other than take their money. Make no mistake, that’s what all of these new unionizations in Michigan are about. SEIU and other unions are losing members in traditional unionized industries in Michigan. They want the cash to fund political campaigns, the best way to get it is to skirt the rules and force people into a union even if the employees have no need or desire to be part of a union.

This is what happens when people don’t have the right to work without being forced to join a union. The state government under the Democrats allowed several absurd unionizations occur, all of which saw the state hand over thousands directly to the union. Now that a Republican is Governor, it isn’t happening as much. But that hasn’t stopped the unions from trying. They’re only able to pull this stunt off because once the union is established, there’s no way to avoid paying dues. This is only able to happen because Michigan is a forced unionization state. SEIU has made $30 million on home health care workers, almost none of whom voted for a union or even knew there was a union vote. This is big business for the unions and it’s happening in every state that doesn’t allow people the freedom to work without joining a union.
