Left-Wing Attacks On Free Speech Escalate

The left-wing assault on free speech in the wake of the Giffords shooting Saturday continues. Rep. Jim Clyburn renewed his call for reinstating the Fairness Doctrine yesterday. The Fairness Doctrine is little more than a vehicle for liberals to remove conservatives from the talk radio airwaves. The socialist motto is never let a good crisis go to waste. It’s pretty clear the progressive socialists in the Federal government aren’t going to let this shooting go to waste without demanding conservatives shut up. Make no mistake, this is their goal. They’re tired of conservatives questioning them over the airwaves. They’re tired of conservatives rallying around the ideas of small government. They’re tired of conservatives challenging their moves towards progressive socialism.
The remedy for these troublesome conservatives is two fold. First the progressive left demonize them. This is exactly what they did to Sarah Palin over the weekend. The shooter has no association with Palin and wasn’t influenced by anything Palin has done or said. Yet the left-wing media and liberal Democrats threw her name around and attacked her political speech. Second, the progressive left will try to regulate troublesome conservatives out of the marketplace of ideas. Jim Clyburn’s Fairness Doctrine demand is one way to regulate troublesome conservatives out of the market. Rep. Robert Brady is set to propose sweeping new regulations on speech aimed at members of Congress. All of this is meant to regulate speech, particularly the speech of conservatives.
What’s amazing about all of this is the sheer hypocrisy of the left lobbing these accusations at the right. In their minds only conservatives are to blame for the tense and vitriolic political climate we have today. Their very accusations of course contribute to this climate. But of course, the left can do no wrong. It’s only the right that needs their speech controlled. After eight years of extremely nasty attacks on President Bush, the left has the audacity to blame the right for the current political climate. The hypocrisy of these people is incredible.
The truth of course is that political debate in this country has always been contentious. President John Adams and the Federalist Congress passed laws outlawing speech against the Federal government because the political debate of the day was so heated. The early 19th century saw extremely nasty debates over the Bank of the United States. The Progressive era of the late 19th and early 20th century had extremely heated debates. The New Deal was not supported across the board and was debated in extremely heated ways. The civil rights debates of the 50′s and 60′s were heated and just about every issue since then has been passionate and heated. Contentious political debate isn’t new, it isn’t worse because of 24/7 television coverage (which is only watched by the political junkies who would debate these issues anyway) it’s part of American culture and tradition. It’s part of our culture and tradition that must remain in order for us to continue in freedom.
