Obama Campaign Lies About Romney’s Bain Capital Departure

The Obama campaign is at it again attacking Mitt Romney on Bain Capital. This time they’re alleging that Romney is a liar concerning the date in which he left Bain and a “potential criminal.” All of this stems from a handful of SEC documents that the Obama campaign is likely willfully misreading. The Washington Post fact checker does a good job of debunking Obama’s claim. The willful confusion seems to be over the fact that Romney may have been a Bain owner after he left his managerial role. He’s listed on SEC documents as an owner, that doesn’t mean he’s managing though.

Bain of course declared that Romney left in February 1999. Fortune obtained Bain documents which show that in June 2000 and June 2001 Romney isn’t listed as a key investment professional. In other words, these Bain documents are consistent with Romney’s claim that he left in 1999, which is of course the same as what Bain has claimed. In short, the Obama campaign is willfully ignoring the facts about Romney’s Bain departure. Worse, they’re suggesting he’s a criminal because of various SEC disclosure forms with his name on it. This is as bad as Debbie Wasserman Schultz insinuating Romney is a shady businessman because he has a Swiss bank account and alleging he has a super secret Bermuda corporation no one knows anything about.

In short, the Obama team and the Democrats will stop at nothing to destroy Mitt Romney. Even if it means lying about him and making up stories. The Obama team knows full well the press will more or less ignore the facts that are now coming out about Romney’s Bain Capital departure. They know people will read headlines about Romney being a criminal and most people won’t notice the exonerating facts that come out later. In short, the Obama team is playing fast and loose with the truth hoping enough people are bamboozled. They’re desperate to make Romney the criminal stick with the American public.

It seems highly unlikely that the Obama campaign’s plans will work. Romney has done a good job of getting out information in response to these charges. Some media sites have even done their own investigations in the past and have shown this charge to be false. That the liberal Washington Post isn’t buying this story speaks volumes. This story won’t gain any traction or if it does the traction will be extremely limited. It really begs the question why Obama’s campaign is putting this story out in the first place.

If this story was the sort that could really derail Romney you can bet it wouldn’t be put out there right now. Obama would save this until October, probably right before a debate or perhaps the last weekend before the election. This information would completely destroy a candidate if it was true. Instead it’s being released in July, it screams desperation. Obama’s campaign must be very concerned about their prospects if this is the best they’ve got. That Romney was clearly prepared for it should at least give Republicans some confidence. His campaign may be many things but at least they were quick to respond and not flat footed on this attack. You have to wonder though what Obama’s campaign is thinking dropping a story like this that is debunked in a matter of hours.

UPDATE: The Romney campaign is demanding an apology from the Obama campaign for these Bain lies. Methinks Romney won’t be getting one.
